@khidhaboy - You'll need to use 7zip for that. This page has instructions about halfway down the page.

Hi great tutorial I've got Virtual Box 4 working with Win XP IE6 image - unfortunately Microsoft will be shutting down the XP image on 9th Aug.

Cut a long story short - I've downloaded the Windows 7 IE9 image but it a whole bunch of files (Windows_7_IE9.part01.exe, Windows_7_IE9.part02.rar, Windows_7_IE9.part03.rar, Windows_7_IE9.part04.rar, Windows_7_IE9.part05.rar, Windows_7_IE9.part06.rar, Windows_7_IE9.part07.rar) - Question is how do I correctly put these together to create a VHD file on OSX?

Thanks

thanks so much for the amazing tutorial. it's my first time ever trying to do anything in terminal and i can't believe that i got so far as to be able to run windows.. but alas, I have also been locked out of the unactivated windows and had tried to bypass this as per JTaken's comment post above but have finally reached a dead end as the patch file has been taken down form megaupload website for "violation of terms". :(

In regards to your latest setback mentioned in "Update 3", I managed to find a workaround. Right now, I followed both your instructions and the postings on the following link to get a working version of Windows XP with IE7. The link is as follows:

http://blog.affirmix.com/2009/04/01/ie6-ie7-and-ie8-on-mac-os-x-step-by-step/

(The solutions I came up with came from following several of the responses posted at the end of the article. The following three posting dates of Nov 10, 2009 April 1, 2010 July 28, 2010 were pretty key for me.)

However, if you are willing to follow my instructions, then you will need to first download a small patch from the following: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MJPZIMOH

This small patch will basically "bypass" the Windows Activation. As to it's legitimacy, I feel it somewhat justified as a workable solution since the VPCs are already configured to last for only 90 days or so.

After UnRAR'ing the patch, you will need to prepare the patch to be run within the Windows XP VirtualBox. While some of the other postings have suggested to simply burn the UnRAR'ed contents onto a CD, I opted to spare the CD and convert it to a Windows-readable ISO (i.e. a virtual CD).

[To convert the contents into an ISO, you will have to run "Disk Utility":
    (1) Click on the "New Image" icon to create a new empty ISO container.
    (2) Change the "Format" setting to 'MS-DOS (FAT)', then subsequently change the "Size" setting to the smallest '2.5 MB'.
    (3) Change the "Image Format" setting to 'DVD/CD Master'
    (4) Label your new ISO container (e.g. Anti_WPA.cdr), and make sure to save it in a folder outside of your UnRar'ed "antiwpa" folder. Don't worry if it doesn't have the .iso extension....it's still an ISO in all manner of speaking.

Now that you have a new ISO container, feel free to copy (i.e. drag-and-drop, Ctrl-C, etc.) the "antiwpa" folder into the ISO. Once completed, launch the 'Terminal' app, and navigate to the folder where your new ISO is located. Run the following command:

> hdiutil makehybrid -iso -joliet -o Anti_WPA.iso Anti_WPA.cdr

Once completed, you will now have a Windows-readable ISO image with your new WPA-bypassing technology.]

Here's the tricky part, when you have logged into your Windows XP VirtualBox for the first time make sure to run the "Install Guest Additions..." options from within the VirtualBox Devices drop-down menu. (We have to run the Guest Additions install so our Windows XP will recognize VirtualBox's "CD/DVD Drive".)

Once completed, DO NOT restart Windows immediately. We need to apply our patch before Windows is restarted or else we will be locked out from logging in the next time at the login screen. All that's next to do is to unmount the current VirtualBox ISO from Windows XP, and mount our Anti_WPA.iso drive. Follow the instructions in the "antiwpa" folder, and you should be good. Feel free to restart Windows XP at-will.

(If you are already "locked out" from logging into Windows XP out, you will need to delete the current VirtualBox Windows XP virtual machine, the VHD referenced in VirtualBox, and the actual VHD on your HD. After deleting these 3 references, feel free to recreate the VHD again from the download you got from MS's website.)

I figured this might be helpful to people. I have created an updated version of this screencast. This screencast along with these comments has provided me with some great information, thanks for all your help. Just hope to return the favor.

First off, this tutorial was great!

You said that we are currently stuck because windows now required activation? When it asked for activation I choose to activate over the phone. I called the number and entered the installation id like they said. They gave me a number and now my copy is activated.

Is that what you were referring to or am I missing something?

Also, I was unable to connect to the internet following your screencast and instructions. I was never able to update the drivers for the network adapter. Instead I got a WinXP iso and mounted it to the vhd in VirtualBox. This allowed me to update my drivers for the network card.

I didn't have time to read all 143 comment, so sorry if someone already posted similar information. I just wanted to make sure your guide at the top stayed up-to-date because it was invaluable.

Hey there,

first of, thank you Jeff, this is awesome!

Second, and most important, I have found that after activating (I did it by phone, since I can't seem to connect to the internet) my "Windows" is working fine! No need to pay anything, just a long and painful step. I had to go thru entering almost 100 digit on my phone and then the nice lady gave me an activation #. I can now log in Windows and use the .vhd.

However, I am connecting to the internet via Wifi on my Mac and Windows didn't install any wifi driver. I do not have access to a Ethernet cable neither. I did install the additional thing and everything. Any idea how to enable wifi ? (I have IE 6 installed by the way)

Urgh thank god for that.

The first time I tried doing it, I just ran the installer on the mounted VirtualBox Guest Additions cd within the VM, but now after actually following the guide word for word and extracting the .exe to the drivers folder it is now working.

The WGA came up, but it allowed me to activate it over the internet.
