Shutdown Day – May 03, 2008

Shutdown Day 2008A very interesting idea and a really well executed site asking “Can you survive for 24 hours without your computer?”

It is obvious that without computers we would find our life extremely difficult, maybe even impossible. If they disappeared for just one day, would we be able to cope? Shutdown your computer on 03 May 2008 and find out!

They’re calling it a “global internet experiment”, aimed at getting you to think about just how plugged-in we all are, all the time. Contrary to my first impression, Shutdown Day isn’t primarily about saving energy or carbon offsetting, although it is mentioned. It’s just asking you to think about looking at something other than a computer for a day.

Do we spend too much time at the keyboard, on our cell phones, staring at the TV or playing games? What if this concept was taken to the next step: a shutdown day for cell phones, televisions, ipods and computers? What would result from millions of people completely unplugging for 24 hours?
